Description

Mike Ploog drew the original concept art for John Carpenter's The Thing. The Thing could mimic any living being it came in contact with from man to dog. He did a number of designs for a variety of different looks for the alien creature. This specific design was never used but was certainly inspired many of the final ones which appeared in the movie.
John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorite films, I remember seeing it in the theatre, it didn't do well in theatrical release (blame ET released at the same time). I had been looking for a nice example by Mike for along time, I usually see single figure designs (Jim Warden owns the classic Head Spider design). This is one of the few full realized character design with multiple angles and camera shots, and some storyboard ideas.

I've lost count of how many times I've seen John Carpenter's The Thing. It's one of my all time favorite sci-fi / horror movies. Really interesting to see one of Mike Ploog's unused concepts for the creature.

This is brilliant- I've seen that movie a hundred times at least! This art is fantastic- and likely too disturbing for even that movie to include!
