Description

There were three editions of Bill Mauldin's "Star Spangled Banter". This one, from 1941, was the first to be published, and remains the rarest of the books. Mauldin was doing cartoons for the 45th Division News, and while the division was sent to Louisiana to participate in the largest military war maneuvers ever attempted, Mauldin continued to document the goings-on, while participating in the maneuvers. The Army took advantage of Mauldin's work, and had his cartoons published in a number of newspapers for publicity purposes. Two men from the Universal Press in San Antonio had seen Mauldin's work, and drove to Louisiana to see if they could convince Mauldin to sign a contract to publish a souvenir booklet of the maneuvers. Mauldin jumped at the opportunity, and secured himself a three-day pass, whereby his locked himself in a motel room and created 15 additional cartoons and 25 sketches for the book over a 48 hour period. The book was a smashing success, although Mauldin never saw a dime of his promised royalties. He was just thrilled to have a published book.

This copy has a cute little sketch in it (see additional image). As I mentioned earlier, the book itself is incredibly scarce, and I've never seen another either signed or sketched in.
