DescriptionI have been wanting a commission from Jason Baroody for quite some time.I had the good fortune of meeting Jason last spring at Motor City Comic con,and we talked about a possible Nova commission down the line. A couple months later Jason was offering commissions at rates I could not pass up on his DA page. I gave him my Idea and a couple days later this is what he had for me. Great guy to meet, talk and work with! I really like the tones Jason used for this piece. This is my first attempt at lettering and cover work. I used Gimp(Poor man's Photoshop),for everything. It was quite challenging and a huge learning curve. I know I'm not on the same scale as Chris Ivy who has done all of my work to date, but who knows?,with some practice I may get better! This is a break off from my Nova time travel series. This seemed fitting with Halloween right around the corner. As usual, there is a story behind the art and cover. Nova 12.1 “Nova: Hero for Hire”(This story takes place after Werewolf by Night #43) Jack Russell is in New York City and on the loose, and his girlfriend Topaz wants to find him. She knows she will need some extra special help to do so and places a call to Luke Cage Hero for Hire. Luke tells Topaz that he is no longer in the “For Hire” business and in unavailable to help. He suggests that she put a want add in the paper as a joke. Topaz does just that! Richard Rider needs money bad. His parents cannot afford to make the mortgage payment on their home, and the possibility of losing it looms large without some cash quick. Rich see's the article posted in the Daily Bugle and thinks it's a joke, but the offer is for $10k so he decides to call the number just the same. Rich informs Topaz by phone that he is The Man called Nova and Topaz agrees to meet with Rich, having read of Nova's exploits to date. Nova is offered $5k up front to locate, capture and bring back Jack Russell to Topaz. Rich accepts the offer. After all,how hard can it be to find and take down a Werewolf for a guy who has gone toe-to-toe with The Sphinx? While on patrol,Nova intercepts a police call over his radio receiver in his helmet, The Werewolf has been sighted near a warehouse in the meatpacking district. A quick look around reveals nothing until he hears shouting a block away. Two security guards have the Werewolf trapped inside a large building and Nova tells them to stay back. Nova is suddenly struck from behind by The Werewolf, thinking Nova is an enemy. Nova does not know that Jack Russell's mind now controls the body of The Werewolf and a fight ensues. The fight last for a few minutes until Jack actually speaks up to stop the fight. Nova is surprised at a “Talking” Werewolf and the two converse. Jack explains that he has come from LA to New York looking for his girlfriend Topaz. Nova explains that he was hired to bring him to her. As they talk a shot rings out and Jack is struck in the shoulder by a bullet. It seems that others saw the want ad and a group of amateur bounty hunters are here to collect. Nova and Jack take them out quickly and Nova finds a first aid kit to help Jack who has now reverted to human form. Nova gives jack a quick lift to where Topaz is staying and the two are reunited once again. Topaz hands Nova the other half of the 10k she promised him,but he declines. This is something he would have done for free. He gives her back the other half of the money and wishes them well. He'll find another way of raising money to help his parents Next issue: Back to 1944 Social/Sharing |
