DescriptionOne of the inventory stories rescued from oblivion by Al Milgrom for his anthology mag Marvel Fanfare (couldn't thank you enough for that, Mr Milgrom!), "Home Fires" appeared in 1985 but was certainly conceived much earlier, most probably around 1979-1980, as it bears all the marks of the early Frank Miller style, with strong Ditko and Eisner influences.Good pick for me: despite all his ulterior, considerable achievements, I've always been entranced by the versatility of his first comic stories and, as much as his work on Daredevil is known and justly praised, this story (to my knowledge, his only Captain America story ever!) is a lost gem... I mean, look at the power of Cap's jump on the first 3 panels: it's sheer Frank Miller, quite improbable, just like DD's "fancy footwork"... nobody could do it like that! Also, that sequence is a little special: instead of clobbering his Nth hapless villain of the day, here we see Cap just saving lives and helping, even acting as one among the firemen in the last 3 panels (OK, I think he would have been better if he had put his shield aside, especially on panel 5. But, maybe someone had tried to grab it from him while he was not looking?...). Obviously, this was years before the fact, but I feel this page has strong 9/11 overtones, and I quite like to see it that way!... Finally, this scene resounds even heavier today, as we live through such dramatic events in France. What Captain America is standing for is really vibrant on that page... Freedom stands! Peace to you all... Social/Sharing |
