Description

As all fans of Jeff's work are aware, there were two long runs where Jeff created a monthly page for a magazine: Idyl for National Lampoon from January 1972 through February 1976, and I'm Age for Heavy Metal from September 1981 through July 1984. In both cases, it took a few "episodes" for Jeff to hit his stride in terms of how he wanted to present the humor/philosophy that ostensibly provided the reason for the stunning display of breathtaking pen and ink mastery.

The example here is from near the end of the I'm Age run. Using a twist on an old adage, Jeff paints an "Image" both visually and via the written words, and then jarringly distorts it with the last panel. In so doing, he captured the ephemeral nature of beauty and alluded to how it cannot last in one stroke.

The board is about 19" by 26", and although the title is a paste-up and it is light struck where the framed art was exposed, the art is intact and amazing.
