I had seen Mary Perkins On Stage in the newspapers growing up and not paid much attention to it... save one story. But over the last decade I have fallen in love with the strip. There are only a few strips that deserve the "classic" title and this is one of them. The characters are fully developed, stories are more than intriguing (something impossible in today's newspaper strips) and the art is consistently great. Plus, Charles Pelto's Classic Comics Press has collected the strips (soon to complete the entire run) so you can read the stories unimpeded.

Here is another of my favorite dailies... and guess why. The story begins when a husband and wife team - the wife writes and the husband directs - approaches Mary to be in their new film. To get to know one another, they take a cruise from Hollywood down to Mexico. Along the way, there is a storm, the writer reveals she is leaving her husband and though he is depressed he insists on making the movie. To keep the soap opera going, Mary runs into the writer (who has already left her new lover) and tells her that there is trouble on the film... which the writer offers to fix. Have you kept up with all that?

So, in this daily, you get a great shot of Mary in bed being awoken by a 5 AM telephone call from the writer... with a transition to the director in the last panel. Great cinematic story telling! Not to mention that first panel.
