I had seen Mary Perkins On Stage in the newspapers growing up and not paid much attention to it... save one story. But over the last decade I have fallen in love with the strip. There are only a few strips that deserve the "classic" title and this is one of them. The characters are fully developed, stories are more than intriguing (something impossible in today's newspaper strips) and the art is consistently great. Plus, Charles Pelto's Classic Comics Press has collected the strips (soon to complete the entire run) so you can read the stories unimpeded.

This is a daily from 1962 showing Mary at a party when her husband enters on the arm of a manipulative woman he has been assigned to photograph.

One thing I have learned from collecting On Stage art is that Starr often used a panel from the Sunday strip to "set the stage" for the next week's arc. So, often, the Monday or Tuesday strip would utilize a stat from a panel in the Sunday. That can be seen here in the first panel which is mostly a stat... but the rest is glorious Starr with great shots of Mary and the mysterious Morganna.

Yes, I bothers me that so many dailies have 1 out of only 3 panels created with stats, and it's not always the first panel, as I've seen some dailies where the last panel is the stated one. However,like yourself, I wouldn't hesitate to buy dailies with stats in cases where the other panels contain quality imagery, as this one does!
