DescriptionThis one means a lot to me. I was following a few Marvel books at the time, but the Contest of Champions is what really opened the door to the Marvel universe. Here was every superhero I knew (and many that I didn't), all thrown together for a fight! I know mega crossover double page splashes are more commonplace in the modern books, but you didn't see that back in the early 80s. I was captivated by such an awesome assemblage and I can honestly say that this dps helped to launch my youthful infatuation with comics. Dan, you have my most sincere thanks for letting me steward this piece!You'll notice an odd stat on the right side of the piece. To make a long story short, this page was drawn a couple of years before it got published and continuity demanded some changes. Underneath the stat (which is oa) you'll find Giant Man (Bill Foster). Some other notable changes were made to change Yellowjacket to Wolverine and Captain Marvel to Captain Britain. I've attached a pic of the piece before revisions for reference. Social/Sharing |

Dan, For me, this is the grail to beat all grails. My nine year old self spent countless hours studying and memorizing the characters on this page. This series meant the world to me and informed me if the rest of the Marvel Universe that I fell in love with. Congrats.

This is one where grail can be used and it is not an exaggeration. What a piece and what a classic image with insane amount of work. Wow. Bravo.

I'm glad you were finally able to add this piece to your permanent collection. This meets my nostalgic sweet spot as well. There are more heroes per square inch than any other DPS I've ever seen. Congratulations! Cheers! N.

I like the original better...Giant Man looks good there and there is even a small Red Guardian instead of Spider Woman! Normally I don't like big crowded pieces, but in this case the layout makes sense, as everybody is wondering what the *** is happening. Masterpiece!

THE Seminal Work that captures a grand moment in Comic History!!!! I recall being Blown Away by the beauty and magnitude of all the heroes and am still so as I look upon this mow. I Bow to you, my friend, in honor and adulation of The True Grail!!!!

Comic book history. Hard to believe, since so commonplace now, but this is the ORIGINAL 'Limited Series' a concept not formally tried in the US before then. It takes a special piece to deserve 'Permanent Collection' status, and this qualifies in spades.

Perhaps one of the most significant pieces of artwork from the Copper Age/Modern Age of comics. Not only is this image of the assembly of heroes breathtaking, it preceded Secret Wars in assembling all the heroes/villains in a comic book series. Common nowadays but a new concept back in the early 80s.

Missed commenting on this one until now - quite an awesome assembly and the art is classic nostalgia late 70s/early 80s style for me!
