DescriptionThere seems to be some degree of confusion about this 87th issue of the Avengers. The credits read "Frank Giacoia & Sal Buscema - Artists". In the Marvel Masterworks volume reprinting this story, Roy Thomas explains that, like he did for Avengers 73, Frank Giacoia tried his hand at penciling, which he was more than able to do, except that he was too slow to meet the Marvel deadline. Sal Buscema then stepped in to finish the artwork.Well, the exact split of who did what may be impossible to determine precisely (And, to accomodate this, I gave equal billing to the 2 artists!), but, reading the story, I have always found the Sal Buscema style to be heavily dominant here. And, looking closely at the art, one can clearly see the blue lines layouts that could imply these were done by Frank Giacoia while Sal Buscema may have done the rest (Any additional information and opinion is welcome!). Not that I complain, as I always loved Sal Buscema, especially his first phase, with precise lines and very lush inks... Also, this was one of my favourite Avengers stories, coming back on the origin of one of my favourite characters: the Black Panther! So, whoever did what is only detail. What counts here, is a great story (by Roy Thomas) and great art that make for good fun Silver Age reading! Social/Sharing |

Nice to see Black Panther in action (I would be willing to bet that you are a blackpanther fan!)..And what to say about this collaboration between S. Buscema and F. Giacoia? ..Buscema's contribution can not really be confused! ; ) A BIG Congrats on these Marvelous Additions, Al.. Good for you!

I've always found an aura of mistery on the character that made me look for each of his early appearances, from his regular stay with the Avengers to his own series in Jungle Action, not counting his multiple guest-startings. Can't wait to see the movie version, now!...

Yhis story being basically an extended recap of the Black Panther origin, it is no wonder that Kirby's shadow looms large over the art... Not that I complain, though!

A really GREAT page from one of my favorite Avengers comics! I believe Giacoia did the pencils and Sal inked it while also breathing his wonderful life into the characters- just like Hulk 124 where his inks did much more than simply enhance Trimpe's pencils. Sal was such an incredible inker in his early years (as the rich use of blacks throughout the page so beautifully proves) and that last panel is nothing short of absolutely amazing!
