DescriptionIt took an artist to introduce me to an artist which Doug Beekman did several years ago when he showed me a work he owned by Fortunino Matania. Doug marveled at Matania’s exactness and attention to detail, and I was stunned by Matania’s ability to put so much detail onto such little board space. Then, quite frankly, I forgot about Matania for awhile, that is, until Tom Benham posted a new Matania on his CAF gallery, just one gem in a whole jewelry store. Tom kindly sold me two of his Matanias (Mataniae?) which are included in this gallery. Then he talked to his buddy, Brett Bjornsrud, an equally nice and generous guy, and Brett promptly sold me this Matania beauty, “Between the Lion and the Rose.” As an old friend of mine once said, “I could use a little beauty in my life.” Thanks to Tom and Brett and Fortunino Matania, I’m feeling a lot more beautiful lately. Like most Matania art, this illustration was published in Brittania and Eve, a popular British entertainment magazine, in 1935. Like most Matania art, this one has a quasi-historical/legendary origin, in this case the story of a Scottish warrior who, tricked by the English, is wounded and would have been killed were it not for the bravery and kindness of an English maid who saved his life and nursed him to health. That is all I know about this over-sized, 11 X 15 Matania. If others can fill in additional details, I’m all ears, as they say. Social/Sharing |

The amount of detail in this piece is crazy! That's one of those pieces of art that you don't just look at, you study it and try and imagine how much time he put into each one of those works of art. Congrats on another Fantastic addition to your collection.
