DescriptionI’m still learning about Frank Godwin. Influenced by Flagg and Gibson, Godwin in turn influenced such greats as Williamson and Frazetta.Although he might be best known for his Connie and Rusty Riley strips, Godwin did it all including numerous magazine advertisements and book illustrations. He worked in all media as well, including pen and ink, gouache, and oils. Here is a very nationalistic ad Godwin painted for Texaco. The ad saw print in many of the country’s top magazines in 1943 including Life Magazine. Although his signature does not appear on this print ad, Texaco so recognized Godwin’s genius that he became one of the few illustrators the company allowed to sign his work. Additional images show the ad copy as well as some provenance on the back of the painting. The composition is so stunning that Al Williamson copied it for a comic book splash called, “The Jungle.” Thanks again, Doug. Social/Sharing |

Awesome piece Mark! You cannot go wrong with some of history's best illustrators and Godwin is right up there among them. Great example of his rare color work as well!

Nice addition to your collection. We were fortunate to have an illustrator/artist of Godwin's skill dabble in comics. I have always liked this painting. A good choice.

Very nice! He also did some very nice Coca-Cola ads as well, along with a million other things he did well at!
