DescriptionI've said it before, I'll say it again: Gray Morrow was a stupendous artist whose work reached such a plateau in the early 70's that he became a class on his own!DC's new line of horror mags seemed to have given him free reign to experiment and I suspect he was given the most outlandish stories only to allow him to go for the most incredibly psychedelic designs, conveying both the myriad possible realities around, but also the unspeakable terror of the human being when confronted to it... (Well, of course, that was not his only forte: look at all the great ambiance tales he conjured... But, that's another story!). OK, this one happened in Witching Hour 10, a particularly blessed issue, since, under a gorgeous Neal Adams cover, there are only 2 stories: "Hold softly, hand of death", illustrated by Alex Toth (check further on my Toth gallery for a page of this gem!) and "A warp in time loses everything" with mind-blowing art by Gray Morrow... Granted, the colours on the printed page are fabulous, but the line work on the original page is something to behold! The way Gray Morrow plays on the shifting scenes (one per panel, no less) and the awkward panel frames perfectly convey the confusion experienced by the hapless hero. The techniques and textures change completely from one panel to the other, the perspectives are suitably distorted (warped), while the central character remains perfectly clear and visible, adding to the ghostly effect. This is an outstanding example of Gray Morrow demonstrating his dazzling array of techniques and how he was able to channel them at the service of the story. Mind-blowing, I tell you... Wow, I remember this story from The Witching Hour. Morrow did some amazing work for the DC horror line of comics.
