John Byrne's impact on the Bronze Age comic scene was brilliant, immediate, and is still felt today. Working his way up the ranks at B-level publisher Charlton, Byrne quickly landed a position at Marvel, where he would go on to revolutionize the X-Men franchise. Alongside writer Chris Claremont, Byrne turned Wolverine and Dark Phoenix into two of the most-beloved characters in the history of the publishing house. Before taking the Fantastic Four into its second golden age, Byrne would do spot work on the title whenever called upon, and this half-splash page comes from his very first work on the FF franchise. The piece stands as a precursor of great things to come.

Fantastic Four 209 presented the first comic book appearance of the team's newest member, the oft-maligned H.E.R.B.I.E., who appears in the upper panel next to the Thing. Luckily, all thoughts of irritating robots are wiped away in one fell swoop by Galactus in what very may well be Byrne's first depiction of the cosmic threat. This is a very important, historical, and collectible piece of comic art. This piece shows one of the great illustrators just starting to embark on a long journey with some of Marvel's most-beloved characters.
