Description

2016 was a weird collecting year for me. I bought twice as much art as I retained, leading me to wonder again if I wanted to continue with this expensive hobby. Surprisingly, this rare stab at a commissioned piece from Joan Pelaez ended up being the best thing I got.

Not that I anticipated Mr. Pelaez's coming through with anything less than superlative work when I approached him about creating something on my behalf. I'm really not a collector of commissions, though, or even of convention sketches. I prefer the known quantity of what exists to the potential for disappointment of what's tailor-made. (I don't spend money on lottery tickets, either. Guess I'm not a risk-taker.)

I've owned more than a dozen of Joan Pelaez's fantasy works for SQP publications, but I feel that what he did for me is an exquisite gem. As nice as I thought it was when I received it, the simple rough didn't begin to convey the beauty of the finish.

Mr. Pelaez gave me three prelims from which to choose my commission. I've displayed these variant images here. All were based on my suggestion that the artist might portray a Chinese mermaid.

Unbelievable! What a striking image! Normally I never comment on non-comic art, but this piece compells me to offer my sincerest compliments! Kudos, dude!
