Description

Cel sketch of Superman from the original 1973 Super-friends first season opening title animation sequence showing Supes stopping the train before going off the track. Alex Toth was the Animation Supervisor, Art Director, and Character Designer for the first season of Super-Friends.

What's interesting to see in this sketch were the changes made in how this was animated to create the panning effect of stopping the train across the screen. The registration holes which are normally at the bottom were relocated to the top and placed strategically within each of the 5 cels labeled SM8-SM13 (this is the last in the sequence). These sketches were then xeroxed onto the celluloid (cel) and painted for on-screen use.
