DescriptionThis is a high point of Barry Windsor-Smith, Phase One!During the course of his first year at Marvel (1969, that is), Barry established his own graphic style with a very powerful cocktail of Kirby influences (who else?...) and some Steranko touches added for good measure... This approach had already produced some impressive results, especially on Avengers 66-67 and Daredevil 50-52 (Avengers 66 being an absolute favorite of mine!). He then began 1970 with a couple of assignments in the Marvel horror anthology titles (a clear counter-move against DC, who, despite a stellar casting, rapidly went nowhere...). This phase would end up being well-documented thanks to the Conan try-out story published during this period in Chamber of Darkness, but this very story is equally impressive. While being probably too Marvel-y and not moody enough, this is a very fine rendition of one of HP Lovecraft's key stories,"The Terrible Old Man". After all, here is a page where the main protagonist only waits for something to happen! But the tension build-up is tangible! That's masterful enough for me!... Social/Sharing |

..I've also caught the influences that you underline in your the description, it's really great how you can rebuild Barry Windsor Smith's art history through your splendid collection!

I'm still missing some key period pieces, though... But I don't despair, it all seems to come by gradually!

I agree with you on how cool these issues are! They're mostly overlooked today, I feel. But it's one extra joy of collecting original art: it allows you to dig out more obscure but no less significant pieces of history!

Thanks Mark! It's true that, during this period, BWS had a real sense for wild camera angles!
