Here is a nice 1/2 splash by Dick Ayers featuring the Human Torch and Toro going up against the APE, an Italian slumlord. Torch and Toro are original art by Carl Burgos on a paste-up. Below is Ayer's drawing of the Torch/Toro panel which is under the paste up

I'm not convinced this would now be 'politically correct' - actually it would more likely be called Fake News!! - but it's a great piece!

Not sure why Marvel replaced the Ayers figures with Burgos other than he is strongly identified with the character. p> Incredible get!!!!!

You're probably right about the 'identified with the character' hypothesis, but I'm actually torn between which depiction I prefer. Ayers' Torches are gritty, but Burgos' are more dynamic. It's a tough call.

Love the early Toro and Human Torch art. I have a modern invaders piece with them in it, but this is awesome to see.
