DescriptionI have been a bit reluctant to post this, since it has strictly speaking nothing to do with comic art, but since the painter is my favorite comic artist, or at least one of them:This is what Carl Barks wanted to do when he retired in 1966. He wanted to live a peaceful and quiet life, and as a new hobby he started to paint landscapes. But then fans and dealers and "agents" wanted him to paint ducks instead of barns and lazy rivers. So his retirement turned out to be not that quiet and peaceful after all. The lure of money may have had something to do with it. This oil on masonite painting from 1970 (No. 9/70 to be precise) is called Coast Range Farm. Barks made the impressive frame himself. Social/Sharing |

I have more than a weak point for these landscapes and simple countryside life paintings by Barks. For me they are much more personal than his Disney paintings - done for money and nothing else. For me, Carl Barks was a geniuos as a storyteller and comic artist, combined. He was second to none, and his influence cannot be overrated. As a painter, he probably wouldn't have been remembered at all - if he was not the Duck Man. This kind of paintings are true Barks. He wanted to live this simple life and paint for himself and friends and neighbors. But we all k now the rest of the story. I really, really tresure these paintings. More than his Disney paintings, actually. But that's just me.
