DescriptionThe US Navy deployed the Douglas Dauntless as the sole dive bomber type on aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater at the beginning of World War II. The typical air group included one fighter squadron of Grumman F4F Wildcats, one torpedo bomber squadron of Douglas TBD Devastators, and two squadrons of SBDs for scouting and dive bombing duties. After the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941, the Japanese Empire attacked and conquered territories for six months. They were turned away at the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. Seeking to draw out the American aircraft carriers for a decisive battle, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Midway Island in June 1942. However, broken codes allowed the US Navy to set up USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown to oppose them. After futile attacks by Midway land planes and carrier torpedo bombers, the SBDs delivered bombs on the aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu. These were four of the six Pearl Harbor carriers. After these losses, the Japanese Navy turned away. The US Navy lost Yorktown, but this battle was the turning point in the Pacific.Comic artist Justin Norman, aka Moritat, was friends with my brother Stuart before I met him, but I've read some of his comics and looked up his art online. I saw he had done a drawing of US Navy World War II planes Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber and Grumman Hellcat fighter. So I figured airplanes were a mutual interest. Running into Justin during my first visit to Emerald City Comic Con, I mentioned I was staying in Seattle for a couple more days with plans to see the Museum of Flight. Justin was a member and gave me a complimentary pass. When Kiri Yashida announced on Facebook that Justin was taking commissions requests, I signed up for one with three subjects as choices. Justin drew a wonderful Douglas A-4M Skyhawk at the Museum of Flight within a week. I was so thrilled that I signed up for this Douglas SBD Dauntless. Along with both subjects being Douglas planes built for US Navy carrier operations, they are both designed by engineer Ed Heinemann.
