DescriptionThe Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was a frequent sight in the skies over my hometown in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960's and 1970's. The Blue Angels flew Skyhawks for Fleet Week in San Francisco starting in 1984. I'll never forget the one-day early surprise as I walked out of the US Restaurant on Columbus Avenue and saw blue jets zipping by overhead. The plane is a small bomber capable of operating off US Navy aircraft carriers. It was employed in the Vietnam War by the US Navy and Marines, the Yom Kippur War in 1973 by the Israeli Air Force, and the Falklands War in 1982 by Argentina. Skyhawks dropped bombs and sank two Royal Navy warships and damaged others. The late Senator John McCain was a Skyhawk pilot. Justin drew the USMC A-4M variant carrying bombs and rocket pods. The falling bombs have deployed fins to slow them down allowing the plane time to get away from the blast.Comic artist Justin Norman, aka Moritat, was friends with my brother Stuart before I met him, but I've read some of his comics and looked up his art online. I saw he had done a drawing of US Navy World War II planes Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber and Grumman Hellcat fighter. So I figured airplanes were a mutual interest. Running into Justin during my first visit to Emerald City Comic Con, I mentioned I was staying in Seattle for a couple more days with plans to see the Museum of Flight. Justin was a member and gave me a complimentary pass. When Kiri Yashida announced on Facebook that Justin was taking commissions requests, I signed up for one with three subjects as choices. Justin drew a wonderful Douglas A-4M Skyhawk at the Museum of Flight within a week. I was so thrilled with this one that I signed up for a Douglas SBD Dauntless, too. Along with both subjects being Douglas planes built for US Navy carrier operations, they are both designed by engineer Ed Heinemann.
