“H’Lo Fellas” (01/30/1964)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Margaret Madeline Chase Smith (1897 –1995) served as a U.S Representative (1940–49) and a U.S. Senator (1949–73) from Maine. She was the first woman to serve in both houses of the United States Congress, and the first woman to represent Maine in either.

On January 27, 1964, Smith announced her candidacy for President of the United States. She declared, "I have few illusions and no money, but I'm staying for the finish. When people keep telling you, you can't do a thing, you kind of like to try. She lost every single primary election, but did manage to win 25% of the vote in Illinois.

In July 1964, she was the first woman to be placed in nomination for the presidency at a major party's convention.
