Description“Stands Tall” (May 16, 1975)By Eddie Germano (1924 - ) 11 x 15, ink and wash on board A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990. Nine months into his presidency, on May 12, 1975, Gerald R. Ford was forced to take military action and deal with an international hostage crisis. When a U.S. ship called the Mayaguez was seized by Cambodia, President Ford made the tough decision to send in the Marines and the entire 40-man crew was rescued. The incident occurred less than two weeks after the fall of Saigon. Naval forces of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia’s communist dictatorship, intercepted the US merchant ship SS Mayaguez off Cambodia’s southern coast. The seizure occurred in a disputed section of the Gulf of Siam, with the international community recognizing the stretch as a free channel, and Khmer Rouge claiming it as Cambodian territory. When the Mayaguez was seized, Ford called the act “piracy,” and attempted to recover the victims through talks with Cambodia. But lacking diplomatic ties between the U.S. and the newly installed Khmer Rouge, Ford’s negotiations with the Cambodian combatants failed. He then opted for military intervention. The names of the Americans killed, as well as those of three US Marines who were left behind on the island of Koh Tang after the battle and were subsequently executed by the Khmer Rouge, are the last names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
