“In Answer to Many Inquiries…” (08/03/1973)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

“In answer to many inquiries, th’ li’l funny remarks you awl heah during these hearings are mah own… ah don’t use script writers!”

Senator Sam Ervin gained lasting fame through his stewardship of the Senate Select Committee to Investigate Campaign Practices, also known as the Senate Watergate Committee (May-August). During the Watergate hearings, Ervin was famous for saying “Well, I’m just a simple country lawyer . . ." and he often told humorous stories in his Southern drawl. This dates from near the end of the hearings, after John Dean’s testimony and the additional revelations that the president had recordings of conversations and phone calls in the White House. On July 23, 1973, President Nixon had refused to turn over the tape recordings.
