DescriptionPrimary Artist Name: ARDIAN SYAFYear: 2012 Dimensions: The art has an approximate image area of 20" X 15.5" 2012, First meeting between New 52 Batgirl and Batwoman. New 52 era Batgirl meets Batwoman for the first time on this highly detailed 2012 Batgirl #12 double page splash by Ardian Syaf. It's created in pencil only. Batgirl AKA Barbara Gordon AKA Oracle is the daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon. She first appeared in 1967's Detective Comics #359 and also appeared in the third season of the Adam West Batman TV show around the same time. She was initially a librarian in her secret identity but later ran for Congress and won. After being paralyzed by the Joker in the one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke in the late 1980s, Babs took up the identity of Oracle, a super computer hacker type, using her library skills. She helped the Suicide Squad and Batman before setting up a female espionage operation called Birds of Prey working with Black Canary and sometimes other female DC heroes for what has become a long running team title. Since 2011, Barbara has recovered from her injuries and is once again operating as Batgirl. Batwoman is a modern day interpretation of the early Silver Age character of Kathy (Batwoman) Kane who first appeared in 1956's Detective Comics #233, in which she was introduced as a love interest for Batman in order to combat the allegations of Batman's homosexuality arising from the controversial 1954 Frederic Wertham book Seduction of the Innocent. The character was written off when the 1964 "New Look" Batman era arrived and except for a brief revival in the 1970s, was not seen again until a revamped version, now called Kate Kane, was introduced in 2006 in the 7th issue of the year-long 52 weekly series. Interestingly, given her original reason for existing, the modern interpretation of Batwoman is a lesbian and had a long-term relationship with Detective Renee Montoya. Batwoman plays a key role in the DC Rebirth era, holding down her own title and helping Batman lead a team of young heroes in Detective Comics. A live action version of Batwoman premiered late last year as part of the Arrowverse crossover, which will hopefully lead to the character receiving her own series later this year. Ardian Syaf has been working as a professional comic book artist for the past decade. He's perhaps best known for his work on the New 52 Batgirl series and the recent X-Men Gold one-shot.
