Description

Batman #567, p. 5: Cassandra's distinctive deficiency is revealed.

Despite being able to navigate the post-apocalyptic and gang-dominated landscape of "No Man's Land" era Gotham City as Barbara Gordon's best courier, Cassandra Cain practically cannot speak nor read. It's not surprising, then, that Barbara, with a doctorate in library science, would take on the task of being Cassandra's literacy instructor.

The word "STOP" and Cassandra looking longingly to the emotional bond between Barbara and her father Jim Gordon in the last frame foreshadow her interaction with her own father, David Cain, later in the same issue.

Subsequent stories would see that word "STOP" revisited, when Cassandra warns Batman in Detective Comics #734 in her own unique way that he cannot stop Cain, when Barbara tells her in Batgirl #25 that after a year of training to prepare for a death duel with Lady Shiva, "For now, I'm stopping this," before Cassandra circumvents her, and when Lady Shiva herself tells her daughter Cassandra later in the same issue, "I'm Shiva. I can't be stopped. But perhaps... you'd like to try."

In the end, the only one who proves unstoppable is always Cassandra Cain.
