Description

James Jean must have been given quite the leeway by this point at DC, or perhaps they were simply vague in their instructions that this particular story involved Batgirl in the Middle East. These are the finished pencils for the cover.

The costume changes that Jean makes for the character, as I recall, are not at all reflected in the story, but honestly, the interior artist they had at the time was not impressing me, so I didn't exactly mind.

I like this sort of Elseworlds take on Batgirl for a Middle Eastern setting: Veiled to blend in, goggles to keep out the dust during a sandstorm, decoratively inscribed curved knife not uncommon for the area.

In the colored product, Jean even imports what appear to be Girih tiles to make it look like she's skulking around a mosque or similar.

This is one of the better Batgirl covers he did. It is a striking image and a great drawing. Shame they never collected these covers into a book. I love his use of mixed media in the digital finishes.
