“Presidential Candidate to Newsboy” (May 8, 1987)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

The Miami Herald published a story on May 3, 1987 that Hart had spent Friday night and most of Saturday with a young woman in his Washington, D.C. townhouse. On May 8, 1987, a week after the story broke, Hart suspended his campaign after the Washington Post threatened to run a story about a woman Hart had dated while separated from his wife.
