“Slob!” (May 2, 1986)

In 1960, Boston Globe cartoonist Phil Bissell, working for $25 a day, was handed an assignment that would change his life—and the lives of fans of the brand-new AFL football team coming to Boston. “Sports editor Jerry Nason came to me and he said, ‘They’ve decided to call the team the Boston Patriots. You better have a cartoon ready for tomorrow’s edition.’” Bissel’s “Pat Patriot” cartoon was the Patriot’s logo from 1961-1992.

A catastrophic nuclear accident occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in the Ukraine.
The accident occurred during a safety test. The test, a simulation of an electrical power outage, was to aid the development of a safety procedure for keeping reactor cooling water circulating until the emergency generators could provide power. This gap was about one minute and had been identified as a potential safety problem that could cause core overheating.

This day marked the fourth attempt to find a solution. Unfortunately, the test had was delayed by ten hours and the reactor operating shift that had specifically prepared for the test procedure was replaced by the next shift. The test supervisor then failed to follow the test procedure, creating unstable operating conditions and, ultimately, an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction.

This fire produced considerable updrafts, releasing radioactive materials, before being finally contained on May 4, 1986.
