“I Never Read the Papers” (1971)

A native Bostonian, Germano became a full-time cartoonist in 1948, at age 24, after serving in WWII. Among other positions, he worked as the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Brockton Enterprise from 1963-1990.

Hitchhiking is thought to have emerged during a time when people needed to be more mobile, particularly during the Depression and WW2, but car ownership was not as common as the need to be on the move.

Starting in the 1960s, lack of car ownership started to reduce.

In the early 1970s, there was a string of high profile abductions and murders of young women hitchhikers in California, accompanying a growing sense of a lack of safety and security about the practice. The growth of the interstate highway system, where walking along the road is prohibited, had also contributed to the downturn.

Interestingly, studies about safety say that the risks have not changed, but that increased car ownership is the most likely reason for the downturn in hitchhiking. In a funny way, Uber and Lyft are more or less organized form of hitchhiking.
