Description

Paul Smith posted this Jason and the Argonauts Skeleton Crew tribute drawing on his blog shortly before Halloween. He wrote of growing up in the 1950's and '60's and enjoying the monster flicks. I loved his final note: "Here's one for our Uncle Ray Harryhausen." Paul really captured the look and feel of these warriors grown from dragon's teeth by an evil wizard. This is a subject I would never think of requesting, but it really captured my attention. So I began a regular ritual of checking Paul's online shop every morning. Waking one day, I peeked at my phone in bed and saw a collector on Facebook had already made a purchase of the Human Torch and bypassed the skeleton. I rushed to my desktop computer and made this one purchase. I was relieved and thrilled. It would be a few weeks before the drawing arrived, but Paul uses four layers of corrugated cardboard for protection and all was well. Ray Harryhausen is a towering figure in filmmaking. He came out to San Diego Comic Con a few times when I was going and I attended a panel including Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, and Forrest Ackerman. I got the chance to meet him and I bought his books Ray Harryhausen: an Animated Life, The Art of Ray Harryhausen, and A Century of Stop Motion Animation: from Méliès to Aardman by Ray Harryhausen & Tony Dalton. Following SDCC in 2010, my brother Stuart and I visited the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to see the Chuck Jones and Ray Harryhausen exhibits. We saw model creatures and miniature sets.

This is fantastic!! Introduced my kids to Jason and the Argonauts, skeleton warriors are by far the favorite part!!!
