DescriptionI´m delighted to add this wonderful original pencil Illustration from the original 1937 storybook to what is quite possibly the most fameous/important Disney movie of all time, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. As was usual for the time, there are no artist credits, but one of the most knowledgeable people (I know) in early Disney artwork believes this to be by the great Hank Porter (Thank you Dennis!!!) and I have to agree with him…Does anyone have more info (or a different opinion) on this piece? This is what Heritage had to say: Complete Story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Old Hag Storybook Illustration (Walt Disney/Harper and Brothers, 1937). Although Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Disney's first feature film, it's still hard to top when it comes to great villains. The Evil Queen as magically transformed into the Old Hag was wonderfully wicked as she poisoned an apple to give to Snow White, and here's that scene as created for the very first Snow White book, published by Harper and Brothers (later Harper & Row, with subsequent editions published by Grosset & Dunlop). The art is in highly detailed graphite on a sheet of 12 field 5-peghole animation paper, with an overall image area of 8.5" x 7". Included are the notations P. 62 and "The poison brew bubbled and boiled... taking an apple, the Queen tied a string to the stem and lowered it into the poison." Most Disney storybook illustrations at the time were created in ink or painted on cel, but this is one of the most beautiful penciled drawings created for this film ever published.
