Description"1981 -- A Flash Odyssey"1981, Reverse Flash Featured in Anniversary Issue with Shocking Revelation: Barry (The Flash) Allen Has Really Been in a Coma Since the Accident in Showcase #4 and Imagined His Life as the Flash! I really like this chapter break page of Barry coming out of the coma. It's really cool having a page from this landmark issue not only by Carmine Infantino but also featuring Reverse Flash! Synopsis for "1981 -- A Flash Odyssey" Barry Allen finds himself swathed in bandages, in a paraplegic ward, where his psychiatrist insists that his life as the Flash is only an elaborate fantasy. Dr. Petrou believes that if he can cure Barry of this conviction then his paralysis will vanish, so he brings in a number of supposed associates of the Flash to persuade him that they have never met. For his part, Barry thinks back to the various villains he has faced over the years, and how they came into being. However, he is shocked when his late wife Iris enters his room--except that she tells him they were never married; she is actually the wife of his old college buddy Wiley Summers, and they have two children. Barry protests that his wife is dead, murdered by Professor Zoom, whom he left in a time machine hurtling backwards towards the Big Bang. Petrou suggests that if he produces Zoom, alive and well, it will prove that Barry's whole life as Flash is just a fantasy. He retreats to his office, where all of Barry's other visitors are gathered, and begins to create a duplicate Professor Zoom out of proto-gases. As the construct cools, the other figures applaud wildly. Soon after, Zoom goes to see Barry, who accepts that he looks and sounds like the Reverse-Flash, but still needs more proof. As Barry's bandages are due to come off that day anyway, Zoom does it at super-speed and Barry finally tells Petrou that he believes him. However Petrou is astounded to see the Flash standing in the doorway and admits that he has no explanation for what he is seeing. Barry suggests one: that he is switching between himself and the Flash at invisible super-speed, allowing an after-image each time to give the impression he is in two places at once. He then spins Petrou round, disorienting him enough to lose his power of illusion and revealing him to be Abra Kadabra. Flash tells him that he overheard the sound of applause and knew that only one of his enemies was vain enough to need that wherever he went. Final proof came in the form of Professor Zoom, aka the Reverse Flash, who could not have existed in a world that never had a Flash in the first place, and thus gave Barry evidence that his memories were genuine.
