Description

Romano Scarpa, Zio Paperone. China su cartoncino, cm 35x25.

Romano Scarpa was born in Venezia on the 27th of September 1927.
He is such a huge fan of “Topolino” that he makes an appearance on n. 418 in 1940 in the weekly mail with one of his drawings, this one is about Venezia. He particularly loves “Mickey Mouse” stories drawn by Floyd Gottfredson.
Always fascinated by Disney characters he goes to “Topolino” director, surprising Mario Gentilini by showing him his drawings made for a story written by Scarpa himself, entitled “Paperino agente investigative”. So in 1953 he debuts with “Biancaneve e Verde Fiamma", on Guido Martina’s texts. In 1956 he’s able to produce his first story as a screenwriter but also a drawer as well: "Paperino e I gamberi in salmì", published divided in two on n. 132 and n. 133 on the fortnightly headline, where it also makes his first appearance “Gedeone”, “Zio Paperone”’s brother.
A few months later his first adventure as a rounded author (both screenplay and drawing made by him) with the character of “Topolino” was born. “Topolino e il mistero di Tapioco Sesto": great start of a wide production that will go on for years and that it will show to be worth the American stories read over and over again by him as a kid.
So, in 1958 “Topolino” becomes a spy complot in “L'unghia di Kalì” (n.183 and n. 184), an adventure that becomes a milestone in the character’s story.
Alongside many beautiful stories, often published in two episodes, he collaborates with historic sagas like "Storia e Gloria Della Dinastia dei Paperi" (1970), with Giovanni Battista Carpi.
He draws many stories reinventing subjects coming directly from the US Disney helping Italia becoming one of the main producers worldwide of Disney stories.
In the 1970s he makes up characters like “Plottigat”, a genius evil creator and “Gambadilegno”’s cousin, and “Bruto detto Gancetto”.
Between the 1980s and the 1990s he produces the "Paperolimpiadi", one of the longest sagas in “Topolino”, published in occasion of the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988.
He dies in Malaga, Spain, on the 23rd of April 2005.
