DescriptionAlex Raymond, Rip Kirby. China su cartoncino, cm 18x52.Alex Raymond was born in New Rochelle on the 2nd of October in 1909. After attending the Grand Central School of Art he starts collaborating with Russ Westover and in 1931 he starts working at the Young brothers' studio, authors of “Cino e Franco”. The big year is 1933 because the King Features Syndicate gives him three strips to work on at the same time. So in 1934 “Flash Gordon”, a hero from outer space, “Jungle Jim” and a touristic guide, “Secret Agent X-9” come out. They all become subjects of serial movies. In 1935 Raymond leaves behind him “Secret Agent X-9”. In 1944 he enlists in the Marines for two years and gets later discharged with the rank as a Sergeant Major. In the meanwhile, his series is worked on by his assistants. Once he gets back home he creates “Rip Kirby”, an ex-marine with a passion for the luxurious life and the hobby of investigation, bespectacled and avid pipe-smoker.. all of this makes him become one of the greatest authors of all time because of the adult themes and a new conception of the main characters of the series itself. As a great lover of motorcars, on the 6th of September in 1956 he tries Stan Drake’s new sports car and dies tragically because of a car accident. Many artists quote Raymond as their source of inspiration for their work, among these let’s quote Jack Kirby, Bob Kane, Russ Manning e Al Williamson. Even director George Lucas has been a big fan of the comic art by Alex Raymond has been influenced by him for the “Stars Wars” films. He gets put in the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1996. Without any doubt Raymond had the most versatile talent among all the comic artists. His influence over other artists hasn’t changed even after his death. Social/Sharing |
