Description

When Jim was announced as part of the line-up of the 2019 Facts festival, I was excited as Jim remains one of my favorite (modern) artists to this day. Any page or cover he draws I find fantastic (with rare exceptions).

So I knew I had to be in line for another commission as I already got one from him in Angouleme years ago.

As I already got a Venom from him, began the thinking for another choice. Black Panther was considered but I choose not to. First because I already got a very nice published page by Jim featuring a full figure of him and second, considering that Jim only draws head or bust sketches at cons, I didn’t think a BP sketch within these parameters would shine.

So who else does Jim draw well? Outside of every character I mean, so PARTICULARLY well. My choice went for Thanos as I find Jim infuses him with a dangerosity and majesty not seen since Starlin or Perez. A truly instant classic rendition so to speak.

I requested that he would be “ready for battle” and asked Jim if he could/would include the Infinity Gauntlet.

The result speaks for itself with tons of geek-pleasing Kirby dots and crackles.

To be fully transparent, I struggled with the result a bit as Jim himself told me it would be more polished if not done at con. Which is a moot point as Jim do not produced at home commissions. The price of admission was also a factor as even though his rate did not budge (much) between years, this was still a considerable price tag for a head/bust sketch. I sometime struggled to see the difference between his basic and elaborate sketches (his two options).

From what I’ve seen since then (and was told), this one is definitely the top tier in terms of result anyway.

But in the end, I am glad for it as it allowed me to speak at length about the hobby and art/artists with Jim. I apologize to him if it was a bit much and if I monopolized his attention too much but when you meet one of your artistic gods, you either switch off and watch or you try to pry as much information out of them I guess.

Totally agree with you. He was inspired on that one. Despite being "just" a head/partial-bust sketch, there is still a sense of motion and action which isn't necessarily easy to convey in such a confined format. The area around the gauntlet being more lightly inked is a subtely rendered detail that goes to say what a master Jim truly is. Congrats on a beautiful sketch!!!

Had to get the Gauntlet in there!  Nice example of Jim's Thanos, whose rendition has become a favorite for many.  Cool you've got all that Krackle in the backgroud :)  And that y'all talked for awhile - he's a nice dude.  Congrats!

Excellent "sketch"; well-deserving of a place in your simply sensational Jim Cheung gallery.  Like the rest of your astonishing, wonderful collection, it is an absolute joy to page through!  Thanks so much for sharing with all of us!

INCREDIBLE.

Cheung's art just somehow gets better and better!

Looking at this, I know I have to get on his next commission list for a second piece (I got one a few years ago).
