Description

For me, this is about as good as it gets. Winsor McCay is my favorite strip artist, and this was drawn at the peak of his powers, about two years into the Little Nemo run, and features one of my favorite McCay characters, Father Time.

Art is large (27” x 14”), and has the same characters as the Little Nemo Sunday published just two days before (see additional photo). As this is signed “Silas” it was clearly done for the Evening Telegram, as a counterpart to the Little Nemo published for the NY Herald. McCay Father Time original art is impossible to find. I have never seen another one for sale and don’t know if other examples exist — if they do, they are hidden away in private collections somewhere.

These great McCay pieces are getting harder and harder to find (or at least, afford). If this is the last McCay piece I ever buy, I will die a happy man. My wife is a saint for letting me pursue it.

Wow! Spectacular piece. I love the theme and characters. As much as I love Little Nemo, I am not sure I'd want to own one other than a few particular ones as they were meant for color and so the line work is pretty light (at least in the ones I have seen) and they don't present as well in person for this reason. This looks more like it was meant for black and white publishing and so the line work is more bold. I bet it looks amazing in person. Congratulations.
