As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, a John Romita Sr. piece was among my holiest of grails. And what character suits him better if not for the magnificent Mary Jane Watson, who John designed & created together with Stan Lee?

Just wow and instantly recognizable!

I was lucky enough to snag this one on Ebay (only a day after it was posted, because I noticed it gaining a lot of followers). Other than most of the pencil sketches he did, this one is actually inkted as well.

I bought it from the famous art dealer & rep for Marvel artists Anthony Snyder ('Comic Book Men') who kindly provided me with a certificate & whose team couldn't have been nicer through the process. I had also checked with Mike "RomitaMan" Burkey on authenticity. Apparently, I'm only the second private owner of this beauty!

Longtime Romita's friend Spencer reached out to John and showed him the MJ. John said it was definitely his - and it doesn't get any better than John Romita Sr confirming that he drew this MJ back in 1995. It simply doesn't get any better than that!

Piece is done on a backing board - pencils first and then marker over it.

Update 14th of October 2020: I received an email from the original owner who shared his story on acquiring this piece privately to me & who had sold it to Anthony Snyder. It would seem I'm only the second owner of this beauty!

Update 16th of January 2022: Back in late 2020, I signed up for a signature of John through Clan McDonald & hoped for a personalized signature on a scan of this piece. Unfortunately, that didn't work out. Regardless, I've added a scan of the signed scan back in 2021.

Update of 14th of June 2023: Thank You & Rest in peace, John Romita Sr.

We were lucky to have had the most influential Spider-Man artist on our planet for 93 years. Unfortunately, a couple of hours ago, his son shared that this industry giant was no longer with us.

John Romita Sr. - for me - is THE definitive Spider-Man artist, giving the character his popular style, designing so many iconic characters like Mary Jane, & being active for so long.

I never met him, but he had a profound impact on my life, for sure.

Couldn't agree more, CJ! JR SR is what I think about when I think of Spidey and especially his supporting cast!
