DescriptionAaron Lopresti created this pencil prelim for a finished illustration in his new hardcover sketchbook RAW IMAGINATION: 20 years of sketches. The artist is offering a great deal on the book with a remarque for $50 US post paid. I have purchased three myself. Like many artists this year without conventions, Aaron is operating online since C2E2. Usually timed to planned con appearances, I've enjoyed watching his Aaron Lopresti Facebook livestream videos or his YouTube channel videos. The videos begin with items for sale and move on to Aaron drawing sketches and commissions while chatting. This drawing is discussed at the 24 minute 24 second point of the Aaron Con 5 YouTube video. I love to look through Aaron's portfolios at conventions and this is the next best thing. The artist is selling his recent work on Justice League and Wonder Woman/Conan on his own Aaron Lopresti CAF Pages for sale gallery. This is my first Creature from the Black Lagoon drawing. I would not have asked for one, but Aaron's effort caught my eye and I learned some film history last year from the book The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick by author and filmmaker Mallory O'Meara. It turns out the Creature was designed by a woman who studied at Chouinard Art Institute and joined the Disney studio out of school. She went by Mildred Rossi then. After starting in Ink and Paint, she worked on color animation on Fantasia including Chernabog and his demons in The Night on Bald Mountain segment. She left Disney and went to work for Universal Studio adopting the name Milicent Patrick. The artist designed the Creature for the film and was sent on a publicity tour, but her jealous supervisor forced the studio to withhold credit and he fired her upon her return. She went on to other work including acting and continued to draw although not professionally. Animation historian Mindy Johnson met Mallory and the two writers compared notes on the subject. I read about Mildred/Milicent in Mindy's children book Pencils, Pens & Brushes: A Great Girls' Guide to Disney Animation, but have yet to tackle her major work Ink & Paint: The Women of Walt Disney's Animation. I enjoyed the Zoom presentation Film Fatale: The Legacy of Milicent Patrick with Mallory O’Meara and Mindy Johnson. The visual element included footage of Mildred's Fantasia sequences for clearer understanding than I picked up from text descriptions. They also showed her appearance in The Reluctant Dragon; the behind-the-scenes film featured real studio artists as well as actors.

I saw this movie when i was 8 years old when it came out. Since then I wondered if anyone would do artwork with the creature and a mermaid, nice job.
