Description

Aside from possibly Nazis and Ninjas, if there is one character archetype that has become the most well worn trope in all fiction & fantasy it's the jungle girl! From Shanna the She-Devil, to Rima the Jungle Girl, to La the Queen of Opar, probably every permutation conceivable of it has been done by now. In spite of that, however, artist Budd Root's creation of Cavewoman still manages to stand out among a very crowded field (and not just for the obvious reasons, either).

Meriem Cooper (aka, Cavewoman) isn't just the typical babe in the jungle. She's got superhuman strength, and usually ends up in battle with dinosaurs or monsters of some kind. A nice little twist on the whole thing. But not since Bettie Page donned her leopard skin bikini has anyone made her "uniform" look as sexy as Budd Root does for Cavewoman (that is, when she actually manages to stay in it). I mean, just look at this pin up, for example. A "morning stretch" never looked so good (talk about "the best part of waking up" and it's got nothing to do with coffee). And while she is completely covered and not doing anything remotely lascivious, the way Root handles those voluptuous curves of the character, just exudes a risqué vibe that borders on the erotic! Which is probably one of the things that has not only made the jungle girl archetype a mainstay in fictionalized stories for decades, but is likely what has played the largest role in it remaining so popular to become the cliché symbol it is today!

Sometimes things are simply a fad and quickly go out of style. Then, there are others that go out of style but come back into it later. And then you have the ones that never seem to go out of style, no matter how often it gets trotted out. The jungle girl trope certainly seems to fit into the last category, thanks in no small part (no pun intended) to characters like Cavewoman and artists like Budd Root. The fickle fate of popularity never seems to dim on them. And as long as images like this one can keep getting cranked out, it's highly doubtful it ever will!

>> talk about "the best part of waking up, is overflowing cups."

Another achingly sexy Budd Root Cavewoman drawing.
