Description

Some great shots of Luke Cage from a memorable scene in the Maleev and Bendis run. I loved the depth of character that was added to Luke (always one of my favorites) in the early 2000�s, and it all started to take hold in the pages of Daredevil (continuing on, of course, in �New Avengers�).

I loved how the conversation in this scene underscored the fact that, while Luke and Matt have the same end goal, they see the route there as fundamentally different. As part of his larger story, Bendis was trying to isolate Matt from his peers a bit in order to examine the consequences, impacts, and effects Matt�s choices had on his life and state of mind. Even though Daredevil would team up with Luke, Iron Fist, and Spider-Man a few issues later, this scene started to erect some of the walls that would set Matt�s path for the rest of the run.

Whereas he mostly does all of his comics work digitally now, at this point in his career Alex would draw the characters out on 8.5 x 11 vellum and then scan those images into his computer to combine the foregrounds and backgrounds to finish the pages digitally.

These studies (and any others containing the figure drawings of other characters on the page) are the only �paper drawings� that exist for these pages. Thank you once again, Alex!

It's really interesting seeing these types of pages, because of the different types of artistic skill it takes. John Buscema used to draw some layouts/breakdowns this way, where he drew it in such a way as to see dark and light values, and where to put light tones, shading, and colors. I'm totally a process guy, so these types of pages are the nitty gritty modern art, imo. This is what the artist felt they had to work out before they hit the computer, and I dig having that insight. Cool page, Jason. Congrats on getting the only art for this! Adaptation in the modern world!
