DescriptionI do not envy the task set before some comic book colorists. Do they ever experience an existential crisis of sorts? Imagine this page was set in front of you, and your assignment was to "finish it” for publication... Quite the ask, right? How do you imbue it with color without hamstringing it or diminishing its inherent power? Adriano Dell’Alpi does a really nice job on the published page, but I’m very grateful we get the opportunity to see this one (and the Maestro’s other pen and ink / “unpainted” work) here on CAF in all its pre-publication glory. The visual texture of this page is simply off the charts; from fluid (almost liquid) flame to gravel-like fragments of bone, it’s just a treat for the eyes to pore over. Like all of his other techniques, even Simone’s cross-hatching seems more elegant and rich than anyone else’s. His signature “spot colors” here put it over the top, and the fact that the sigils on the Black Priests’ faces spell out “A-G-E” absolutely cracks me up (I mean, it’s what gets us all in the end, right? :) ). (This was obviously changed on the published page - see additional images). Thank you, Andrea and Francesco at Tavoli Originali, and to all those who post their Bianchi pieces here on CAF for us all to enjoy. :) Social/Sharing |

Bianchi is a prodigy. The effects he achieves are otherworldly. And he could offshoot the AGE panel into a birthday card line for artists.

I figure, if you're going to quote, quote someone who writes what you think and says it far more eloquently! 😄

This is awesome. I love how you've GOT to pore over everything to really appreciate it. So much texture and I like how each of the heroes in rendered in panel 1. "Here - color this." "Uhh...OK. How? Are you sure?!" :) Congrats!

The visual effects on this page are off the charts! Reminds me of the Dark Judges from the Judge Dredd universe. Excellent pick up Jason!

Somehow, I'm left with the impression that it was both crisply rendered and abstractly deconstructed. IMO, that's the genius of Bianchi. Like Tradd, he's mastered a style that is precise but abstract, and it looks so fantastic here. That last panel almost looks like a negative version of Mignola work. Awesome piece, Jason! Congrats!

That's a really great observation, J H, and a really effective way of "quantifying" this page. Very well put, and I love the 'negative Mignola' thought. I had never considered that before, but as soon as you said that, I started seeing Mignola skeletons all over this thing. It's like a present! :) Thanks for the great comments, J H and everyone!
