DescriptionNick Bradshaw! Over the weekend, F M posted an absolute corker of a Bradshaw page from ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #800 (go check it out, if you haven’t already!). Among the usual Nick Bradshaw wonders on the piece, it sported some particularly spectacular and detailed “terrestrial planet Earth” backgrounds (both for Spidey and Harry alike).Although I’ve had this piece for a while, now felt like the perfect time to follow F M with an example of Nick’s INTERSTELLAR backgrounds (thanks for leading the way, Fred! :) )! I find it really exciting to see Nick’s crazy pencils in person, chock full of all the cartoony details that make his art so striking. Along with the outstanding Arthur Adams elements that Nick touches upon so effectively in his work (like panel two’s examination of Gamora’s mondo-sized shoes), there’s also some beautiful Jim Cheung-like swirls of smoke in that top panel. The whole thing is also packed to the gills with futuristic architectural detail and electrical arcs. His use of varying line thicknesses is masterfully executed and works to subtly pop elements of the images out: even among all the hyper-detail, your eye never gets lost and goes exactly where it needs to end up. But be careful! One of the dangers of basking in all the incredible individual details is that you might miss a central component on display throughout; Nick’s sense of dramatic storytelling. Gamora’s peril is palpable here, as a bounty hunter springs his trap and captures her for transport to the Badoon… Social/Sharing |

I hate to see Gamora in pain and at the mercy of The Badoon's cats-paw, (Badoons-paw?) but Nick makes it look so cool!

Crackle and hum of electric energy through this page! Pencils of a high order, bringing to life Gamora's every grimace along with the baddie's gloating. Speaking of Gamora, what a hottie (even in pain)!

The two aspects I prefer about the page are the characters' expressions and the depiction of energy (and I totally agree with you on the proximity with cheung here).
The storytelling is also nicely on point.

Well, she Guards The Galaxy,
You know she is mean,
And the way art looked was page interstellar,
So how I wish I had another,
Oh when it's Bradshaw drawing here
Well I look and see,
And line all varies
That before too long I'd fall in love with her,
I wouldn't have even bothered,
Only when Bradshaw's drawing here.
Well my art went boom when she crossed that room,
And I held this page, all mine.

The entire thing is lovely, as Nick's work typically is. But I'm primarily drawn to the second panel. I absolutely love how Bradshaw thought about the fact that the crackling energy coursing through Gamora would cause her to stiffen up and arch her back that way, as well as push down with her toes and raiser her heels like that in the process. So good!

You can always count on Nick to fill every inch of the page with great details that enhance the overall work, and this page lives up to that reputation.

Nick's known for his covers and pin up-y stuff, and rightfully so, but because of that we can sometimes forgot he's no slouch when it comes to storytelling! Great example here as you move top to bottom, and it's also got that great cartoony detail in each panel! I've got a pencil only interior by Nick, too - have had it for a while and love it to this day! Congrats!

So cool to see Bradshaw's beautiful pencil work! Love all the detail he puts into each panel.
