DescriptionThe Amazing Spider-Man! As a child, for me this title recalled the works of Gil Kane and Ross Andru. For others, it conjures up the work of Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. But arguably, one individual had the greatest influence on the look and stories of the web-slinger in his early days. That individual is John Romita, Sr. This past January, John Romita, Sr. turned 91 years old. Over the years, Romita would be a pencil artist, inker, story consultant and art director for Marvel Comics. Starting with Amazing Spider-Man #39 and running through #119, Romita would do interior pencil work for the title. However, his influence lasted until #170 and beyond, where he would be involved in the title in some capacity, often as the cover artist or inker or as a contributor to plot and story ideas. Romita’s clean line work and dynamic style redefined the character, making him more accessible to a larger audience. He drew what became the definitive Spider-Man (and eventually Marvel’s flagship character) for a generation of fans and artists to follow. Romita was also the artist for the daily Spider-Man newspaper strip between 1977 and 1980, just to name a few of his many accomplishments in the industry. So, what I was trying to do with this piece was bring one of John Romita, Sr.’s fan sketches to life and include all the characters, heroes and villains, that Romita encountered on his tenure with the Amazing Spider-Man. While searching online for inspiration, I came across a fan sketch or convention commission of Spider-Man and his then girlfriend and later wife, Mary Jane Watson. Romita originally designed the look of Mary Jane Watson, stating he "used Ann-Margret from the movie Bye Bye Birdie as a guide, using her coloring, the shape of her face, her red hair, etc…” Mary Jane Watson made her first full appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (Nov. 1966), although she first appeared in #25 (June 1965) with her face obscured and had been mentioned since #15 (Aug. 1964). With this piece, I chose to render her in her iconic go-go dancer dress from Amazing Spider-Man #59 (Apr. 1968), her first cover appearance. Below is a list of everyone I tried to include (56 characters) that Romita at some point drew or inked. This was a fun piece to do, as the pressure was off of me to figure out the composition of the central characters.
