DescriptionEd Brubaker, Darwyn Cooke, Mike AllredCatwoman #1 page 19 January 2002 Pen and Ink on Bristol Board, 11x17 inch ----------------------------------------------- ABOUT THE ART ... Catwoman "Year One" 2001, DC need to relaunch Catwoman and they will ask two young artists in the business to redesigne and redevelope the character. Who ? Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke... They started with a four-issue serial "Trail of the Catwoman" in Detective Comics #759–762 and after, this story led into a new Catwoman title in late 2001. The most interesting point in their work is the new direction of the relationship between Batman and Catwoman and this page is a, IMHO, "The One", the most representative example. All the Selina's fragility and complexity ( "... but I think it's just a lot more complicated than that") summary on a page ... Character design With the release of a new solo series, Catwoman was once again given an overhaul in the costuming department. Designed by Darwyn Cooke, from a suggestion by Ed Brubaker and his wife, Catwoman was now attired in an Emma Peel-esque catsuit with aviator helmet and goggles. Indeed, they decided to give to her character a costume more "casual" than sexy. More simple when you want to jump on rooftop ! Of course, before this relaunch, Catwoman was already developed particulary by Frank Miller (Batman Year 1 - 87) and Loeb/Sale (Batman The Long Halloween 96-97 / Dark Victory 99-00) but with Brubaker's tight, noir-like scripting and Darwyn Cooke's stylish artwork, Catwoman's new direction made the character more popular than ever. Their rendition of Catwoman (personality and design) was unchanged almost 20 years, so a eternity for a comic book character! Social/Sharing |

Two dudes who are attuned to each other's sensibilities result in something special. Not all too surprised Cooke and Allred would create magic.

I love to see these Cooke/Allred/Brubaker pages! I am lucky to own a page from #3, and it is the heart of my collection. The question that I will always have is, "Why only four issues"?!?!?
Thank you again for sharing.
