Description

I have always loved CHUCK WOJTKIEWICZ' art in comics format before he left for the animation world and this is my first published page from him, a great splash to boot and from a landmark issue. I always wanted to add a published example from him to compliment my great She-Hulk sketch (visible in this gallery). A much-overlooked talent, at the time of his career in comics and even more so nowadays.

I must confess that I have never read that era of the Justice League but always intended to. So, I was bummed when DC cancelled an announced collection due to the bad press linked to its writer years ago. All the pages and art I've seen in other collectors' collection or at auction stood out as great stylish art & thoughtful storytelling.

Now unto the page.

I'm not specially a fan of Lord Havok (who is?) but I find that the use of shadow & light to enhances the menacing tone of the scene revealing the main villain is exceptional here. Same goes for all the tech tidbits on the villain and around him which are super impressive. The crouched pose and the evil eye are pitch perfect as well.

To me it evokes « what if Dr Doom had a rectangle head instead of triangled one ? » ^^.

Lastly, I need to mention Bob Dvorak incredibly precise and smooth inks here as they are faultless and I really enjoy this on any page. It takes me back to my love for the Gaijin studio school of art.

I include the published page for comparison but we will all agree and not only does it look better in b&w, it looks even (much) more dramatic that way (and it serves the story better).

Truly beautiful piece from an artist I didn't know. Congrats on landing that splendid page? I can clearly see the link with Gaijin Studio as far as inking is concerned and why this appealed to you. ;-)

It does look better in b&w.  Lord Havok should turn the lights on when making a huge 100th issue entrance to show off that paint job and clear coat.

The thing I notice most is that the the inks really compliment the pencils perfectly and combine to render the metal outfit in a way that actually makes you believe it's actually made of metal. Very nicely done. The only thing I'm confused about is, when did Havok change from that early 90's inspired ugly outfit into this clunky metallic one? Also, when did Havok become a Lord? It's impossible to keep up with the convoluted history of these mutants, I tell ya!

You dialed up the wrong universe, but given that DC can't keep their continuity straight in any medium, I'm going to guess you are right all along.

LOL! Given what Marvel is planning, you might soon think DC's continuity is pretty straightforward!

Have you heard the "brilliant" plans from The House of Shitty Ideas going forward? They've decided to do something really original that no one has ever done before. They'll be introducing the concept of, wait for it, The Multiverse! Yes, now you and all your friends can revel in the joy of 2,000 different earths instead of only one! Because what's better than an all-time classic character like Spider-Man swinging around Manhattan? You guessed it, 2,000 different versions of Spider-Man! But wait, there's more! Because what happens when you create 2,000 different versions of Earth? You got it! Instead of just 2,000 versions of Spider-Man, now we'll also have 2,000 different versions of EVERY character in the Marvel Universe! Oh, sorry, the Marvel Multiverse! First in the movies, then in the comics! But those $6 floppies NOW!

So while DC's lunch was getting eaten by Marvel year after year from the mid 60's until present day, with the primary complaint from comic fans about DC being that they hate the idea that there isn't just one earth, now the House of Shitty Ideas has decided that copying the worst part of DC's model that kept DC as the number two publisher forever, is suddenly a GREAT idea! When all is said and done, both publishers might as well just merge and make things as bad as they can possibly be. What a $!@#% shit show.....

Don't judge so fast.  Spider-Man already won an Oscar with that concept.  Fiege could open it up just as fast as they can shut it down.  As for DC, if Lord Havok is allowed, think how many issues they can sell with a title like Lord Wolverine.

Hah ha ha! Hey, maybe that's already in their plans! Since it's a multiverse now, they have an unlimited number of bad ideas to fullfill and spoon feed to Marvel zombies who will buy anything they come up with. Perhaps that will be one of the new earths. Earth-L, where every super human is a Lord, and the secret ruler of all those Lords is eventually revealed to be, wait for it....Famed former MLB knuckleballer, GayLord Perry! One knuckleballer to rule them all! 😂

Ah, poor Fred. We've hijacked your Lord Havok comments thread. Vive la Belgique!

Rectangle Headed Doom is the name of my Gwar cover band. ;) I wasn't aware this artist before, but I see what you mean. That is really nicely rendered, and the armor just looks cool. It's like Doom mixed with Ultron, with a dash of DC styling. Very nice. Thanks for sharing, FM. Congrats!
