Description

I quite enjoyed this series and love the style Immonen decided to use in it. This isn't the most character heavy page but it was one of the first pieces of original Art I ever bought (so still quite shocked at prices and aimed low) and wanted a page that had everybody from the family on it.

The clean minimalist lines on all the characters' faces are just fantastic.

Purchase from Von Grawbadger's rep, Essential Sequentials.

You know, for being so accomplished at their craft, I'm not sure that Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger actually grok that comics are (for the most part) a static medium.  I mean, just look at the incredible sense of motion all throughout this beauty: a gorgeous star field in that first panel (that even explodes outside the panel borders) to literally thrust us into an incredible state of velocity and momentum.  And then everything come to a bit of a startling halt when the camera moves into the cockpit in panel two and shows a hilarious lack of concern or of anything out of the ordinary by any of the occupants (except by Dane, of course, who is sitting forward in his seat and focused intensely on his task at hand).  Then, BOOM again as we're back out in space hurtling impossibly fast towards fate and destiny and infinity and beyond (thanks to some great manga-informed inking on the stars hurtling past, with those lovely "blurred" edges).

I love that star field in panel 1 (always a treat when artists don't "BWS" it).  I love that beautiful family portrait in panel 2.  I REALLY love that wide, blank "swoop in" from the left side of panel 3.  There's not really anything I don't love here.  :)

I sincerely hope that Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger truly enjoy drawing speeding spacecraft, because they're among the best to have ever done so.  Man, even right out of the gate you had a great eye, Christian.  :)  Congrats on this page - AWESOME pick up!

Great commentary and analysis again Jason.

And thanks for the compliment. I grew up dreaming of drawing for Marvel, studied Art in college and university, and prior to my current gig I was responsible for an Art department of over 100 artists at a videogame company... so it'd be pretty shameful if I didn't have some degree of artistic instincts in this hobby. :)

(still acknowledging that Art appreciation can be quite subjective and that not that all my aquisitions have been purely driven by aesthetics.)
