Description

Delighted to finally post a piece by this great artist, especially from this series. Getting to revel in Nick Derington’s renditions of many of the various wonders of the DC Universe was one of my favorite things about this fun run; his work really fit the tone of the series to a ‘T’. Batman in Gorilla City? Uh, yes, please.

An immaculate stage-setting in the fully detailed and richly textured first panel, moving into a “simpler” second two panels, where the viewer’s eye can take in the details of the characters during their conversation. Really accomplished and effective comics cartooning and storytelling technique.

‘Batman Universe’ is the storyline previously published in twelve 12-page installments in issues of (the Walmart exclusive) 2018 ‘Batman Giant’ comics (starting in #3). ‘Batman Universe’ later collected them into six 24-page issues. This was originally in 'Batman Giant' #6 as page 10, but was later used as 'Batman Universe' #2, p. 21.

Thank you once again, Brandon!

The first panel establishes the scene beautifully. There's something majestic about it, which I believe comes from the combination of the scene taking place in what appears to be the "royal throne room" in Ape City, as well as the camera being up high and shooting from behind the scene. The pencils and inks fuse together beautifully and I LOVE the blue pencil highlights. Most importantly, I LOVE apes and have always found them to be equal parts beautiful yet terrifying at the same time. A wonderful looking page, Jason!

Thanks, Ruben!  Yeah - the blue pencils are super cool, and I love the inital details behind the throne that Nick was obviously considering adding, but then left out (to the strength of the image, imho).  Thanks for the great comment, Ruben (and all!), but come on, man - it's GORILLA City, not Ape City, man.  Jeez... 😜

Dammit! This is exactly why I wish Bill would allow us to edit our comments! Of course, before I even began typing my comment, I was thinking about how much I've always loved apes, hence that mistake. Sigh...But thanks for understanding and not going apeshit on me! 😄

Derington-Bendis power couple serve up a delectable dish here.  Everything from the detail on Bat's cape and 5 o'clock shadow to the expression on dour Big Mr. Ape make a real scene of it.  Congratz as always, good man!

Derington does an amazing job putting Batman in a setting that's definitely off the beaten path for him.  Really excellent stuff

Julius: You know the saying, "Batman see, Batman do."

Cornelius: "Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death."

Only Batman can look that comfortable in front of a giant talking gorilla. I really like Darrington's style on Batman. Great detail, and the blue pencil really makes his OA look very cool. Great pick up, Jason. Congrats!

Fun page from a fun "tour of the DC U" story. The vertical panels layout works well in establishing depth within the scene.

I too like the blue pencils underneath and his art as whole, kind of an Allred 2.0 (with respect to both artists).

Thanks, F M.  Great points about both the vertical layout and the (pop styling) similarities to the great Mike Allred.  As embarassed as I am to admit it, that never crossed my mind before (and now I can't think of anything else).  Thanks for the great comment, Fred (and all)!

I do like that when you see Derington's work, you know it.  Chris Burnham, Aaron Kuder...they get this same type of vibe.  Nice mix of realistic and cartoony style, and the inks must be PURTY in person.  Also, at times not sure what I think about seeing so much blue on a page...but it works just fine here!  Adds a bit of a layered feel.  Congrats, man!
