DescriptionWelcome back to another new art Sundays here at Shemp's Gallery. Seven months into the year and I've maintained my goal of posting a new piece every Sunday. Why a new piece every Sunday? Last year I posted three pieces, which was very sad. I was determined to change my ways and vowed to post a new piece every week for the year. So far so good. Lets keep it going....This month I will be posting what I call specialty art. Art that was published but not in comic book form. It could be anything from poster art, card art, style guides, house ads, apparel and everything in between. From 1982 comes this classic Lois Lane style guide by the talented José Luis García-López. José Luis García-López has worked in the comic industry for more than 40 years, most prominently with DC Comics. José Luis García-López’s greatest contribution to DC was the DC Comics Style Guide, a virtual master class in how to portray DC Comics’ iconic characters. First released in 1982, these images were originally intended to be used solely for marketing and licensing however his contributions to the visual style of several iconic DC characters, as well as his influence on artists who would follow him, is undeniable. The style guide taught many up-and-coming artists, and even some of García-López’s contemporaries, how to properly illustrate the major characters in the publisher’s canon. The guide's effect on the entire company, from the look of its comics to the production of its merchandise, cannot be overstated. Proud to be the owner of a few of these, they are perfection! 1982's Lois Lane from the DC Comics style guide by José Luis García-López and Dick Giordano. Social/Sharing |

A really great looking piece, and so perfectly 80's! The interesting thing to me is that I thought it was pure Giordano until I looked down and saw Garcia-Lopez's signature. Not a complete surprise though, as JLGL usually illustrated these things himself. That tells us that he likely took the job even though he was likely swamped with other work, and Giordano himself was likely the guy who probably said "If you can just give me the layouts for it, I'll do the finishes."
Dick Giordano was such a great artist in his own right. An incredibly good penciller himself, he always understood the fine art of inking other pencillers.

Talk like a sailor, drink like a captain, dress like you own the boat. Everyone has a little bit of cap'n in them.

Jose Luis Garcia Lopez and Dick Giordano style guide goodness and the style really went out quick with 80's fashion being one of Lois' main visual features here. She does have a bit of the Captain Morgan in her pose and attitude that carries over to today.

That's an awesome piece of art that also happens to be a great time capsule too! Huge congrats!

I was considering this one. Both charming and a fantastic show of JLG's artistic genius.

I suppose it is no wonder that I enjoy seeing these old DC style guides as JLGL and Giordano have/had a lot of artistic style. Cheers!
