DescriptionI consider Alan Moore's Marvelman stories from Warrior magazine to be as brilliant and game changing as his more widely known work in Watchmen. Moore's reinvention of what had been a mostly forgotten 1950s comic book character provided him the opportunity to explore a decidedly darker and more mature side of the superhero genre. My introduction to the series came about years after its initial publication, when I stumbled upon a run of the first 5 or 6 issues of the Eclipse Comics reprints - retitled as Miracleman to avoid potential legal issues with Marvel Comics - in a comic shop dollar bin in Greensboro, NC nearly 3 decades ago. Those books blew my mind, and I still have them all these years later. While Garry Leach's early art from Moore's run on the series was serviceable in my opinion, I loved the art by Alan Davis and, later, John Totleben. This page, featuring a very pregnant Liz Moran at work at her drawing table, is a perfect mix of Moore's writing and Davis' art. I love how Davis eschews traditional panels in favor of the stark black background lit only by the drawing lamp, which lends a sense of foreboding and heightens the impact of Liz’s neuroses. Thanks to Jim Warden for the hook up. Social/Sharing |

It's amazing what you can find in a dollar bin. Love the lighting and the self-referential creative process scene.

This page oozes style. Just the interplay of light and shadow blows my mind.
