DescriptionThis is just an incredible take on Dr Destiny by the too rare J.J.Kirby.This was drawn as character designs for an online game. I bought several of them based on my love for J.J.’s art and kept this one under my sleeve, as it’s probably the best of them. You’ve probably got every nightmare you could think of here. Snakes, flies, spiders, crawling insects, a creepy baby doll (a nod to Toy Story?), tentacles, a clawy paw, staring eyes and what looks like Sadako from Ring. And let’s not forget the creepy fumes all around him nor the liquid dripping upwards from the cracked ground. In terms of style, this is the perfect piece for JJ to show off his skills as it’s both cartoony and creepy at the same time. The difference in textures is amazing. Just look at the scales on the snake’s tail, the sense of movement within the tentacles, the fine cross-hatching, the vaporous distortions of the spirits within the fumes. I love for instance that the last one on the bottom right is two creatures in one as the maw of the upper one is defined by the spiky hair of the one below. Great stuff. Dr Destiny is perfect with his Skeletor like grin, looking at you like he is going to invade YOUR dreams. And needless to say that the inks are pitch perfect here, not a drop of white-out and hardly a visible inked line. Perfection I tell you. Social/Sharing |

I love creepy, Horror art. Of course I typically prefer it done in a realistic style, but this cartoony approach is still very interesting to me. My favourite part is the creepy, crazy looking chick at the botom left!

Was there ichor dripping off of the page when you bought it? I see why it's your favorite, this is super creepy-cool work from JJ. I love the blood dripping up. Very cool Dr Destiny rendering, and I love all the horrific details. I would not be standing so calmly with all those bugs on my legs, that's for sure. Monstrous congrats!

I really, really love this piece, F M. I keep coming back to it and looking at it, and really enjoy this work. Your write up is great, too, and underscores so much of what I love about it; the 'inventory' of nightmares, and (especially!) the liquid dripping upwards from the floor. Those gaseous skulls and specters always make me think of Frazetta's "Conan, The Adventurer" piece, and although I'm guessing Mr. Kirby's was not referencing that here, there are some fun similarities (like Dr. D's stance and lengthy, sword-like loin cloth here...). Really cool piece, F M! Congrats!
